The relatively rugged coast south of Carmel is known as Big Sur and is characterized by usually dry rocky headlands, and narrow roads.
Their are areas of some "big trees" along the way, but views of the coast are the usual draw.
In the 60s, and still so to a lesser degree, Big Sur served as a center for hippie communes and other alternative life styles...
